A New Decade of Design: 2020 Interior Design Trends

Trends We’re Loving for 2020

New year, new look for AKD! Welcome to our new site and brand refresh. We are so excited to enter this new decade with a look that embodies our brand so perfectly. It’s been a beautiful (and, at times, chaotic) journey since launching AKD six years ago, and we are so thankful for your support along the way!

As the 2010s come to a close and our new brand carries us into the start of the year, we are excited for the new and fresh styles that a new decade has to offer! Here are some of our favorite trends that we’re predicting in 2020.

Brassy Tones and Mixed Metals

Brass definitely was the comeback kid this past decade, and we think it’s here to stay! We love the elegant touch brass brings to a space in an unexpected way and with timeless appeal. Here at AKD, we also love to add interest by mixing other metals with the warm tones of brass, ensuring your metals don’t feel dated in a few years’ time.

Bold, Statement-Making Color

We’re ready for a color-filled future! The 2010’s saw a lot of greys, blues, and of course, white. Don’t get me wrong — we LOVE serene, neutral palettes, but we’ve been dreaming in color lately! We’ve been noticing that people aren’t scared to try color again, so as we’re looking into the next decade, we see color doing one serious takeover! One of our favorite ways to incorporate color is through a fun wallpaper, which can perfectly add a pop of color or pattern to spaces where you want to feel energized. Smaller spaces are also perfect for bold pops of color – like powder rooms! And when you want to feel more relaxed and serene, like in a bedroom, we suggest keeping the colors a bit toned down.

Smaller Homes and Strategic Spaces

In 2020 and beyond, we think smaller living will become more popular. While we used to see a desire for more square footage, we now see much more interest in finding effective ways to utilize less space. We think we will see a minimization not just with house size, but room size, as well. For a while, homeowners were seeking an open concept home. Now, people want more cozy, individual spaces they can call their own or allow for different activities without disruption. I personally love having small spaces around my home that I can retreat to and unwind. Added bonus – each space can have its own identity and you have a lot of fun designing each individual space, making it so much easier to go bold

Décor with Depth through Eclectic Touches

“Au revoir” matchy-matchy décor! This decade will be all about eclectic décor that adds depth and tells a story. We love that this “trend” is more-so a little insider trick for creating a timeless look. By mix and matching prints, textures, metals, décor items, furniture and more, you end up developing a curated, unique look that is completely personal to your home. It also allows you to very easily incorporate a stunning tapestry from a memorable trip and your grandmother’s antique wooden bench, for example, without worrying that it doesn’t match the room style – the beauty of it is in the individualization and curation!

Here’s to a wonderful 2020! We can’t wait for another decade of amazing design and incredible memories.
