My Can’t-Miss Spots for Holiday Design in Chicago

As much as I love curling up at home next to a crackling fire — with a glass of mulled wine in one hand, and a good read in the other — there is something so special about the magic in the Chicago air as the holidays near that always draws me out and under the twinkling lights. And talk about a city who knows how to really bring together my love for design and merriment…

With so many beautiful displays to swoon over, it’s certainly a challenge to round up the best of Chicago holiday decor — but I’m always up for a challenge. Here at AKD, we always talk about how the most essential piece of design is how it makes you feel, and nothing demonstrates this more than holiday decor.

The Peninsula Hotel

With this being my favorite hotel in the city year-round, it should come as no surprise that I love to unwind here or enjoy an afternoon tea during the holiday season by the massive tree. Whether you want to create a new holiday tradition with your family or sneak away for some people-watching, the delicious bites, bubbles, and tea make for an unforgettable experience. Reservations for holiday afternoon tea are available from November 26 to January 9 — so don’t wait! Bonus: their menu features vegan options, and $5 from every holiday afternoon tea supports a charitable cause.

Candlelight Concerts

Chicago’s “Candlelight” music series isn’t just for seasonal revelers — but I do feel that this time of year is when it’s at its best. Hosted on multiple nights in December, the holiday series features nights filled with your favorite carols and classics or music from The Nutcracker, all housed in spaces filled with glowing candlelight and comfortable furniture. These concerts are not only held in beautiful venues around town, but they’re also a peaceful way to take a deep breath and enjoy the season and its uplifting music.

Winter Wonderland at I|O Godfrey

With colored lights and heated igloos, this frosty rooftop getaway is the perfect escape for a cocktail and a view. Thanks to a live DJ, fire pits, and seasonal drink offerings, you’ll feel like you’re experiencing a true Chicago night on the town while also basking in the most wonderful time of the year. Make sure to book an igloo early — this will fill up!

Christkindlmarket

As one of the most recognizable holiday spots in town, this European artisan market is a family favorite in my household. With two locations (one downtown, and one in Wrigleyville), it’s a perfect neighborhood spot for a festive afternoon or evening surrounded by globally-inspired design and decor. Not only is it a perfect place to browse around and shop for unique ornaments, gifts, and tasty treats, but it’s also a way to introduce your family to artists and makers from around the world. Each year, the market offers commemorative mugs (and yes, my home is full of them from years past!), making it a memorable experience you’ll look back on fondly all year long. Bonus: The Wrigleyville location has an ice rink for skating!

While I probably (definitely) wouldn’t classify Butch McGuire’s holiday decor as “high design,” it still maintains its spot on this list because of its sheer FUN. Decked out in 45,000 pieces of artificial decor (plus trains swirling overhead and one of the best music boxes in the city), this neighborhood favorite bar offers an unforgettable annual experience for me and my friends. It’s silly, it’s festive, and the drinks are delicious — making it kind of like a North Pole for adults, wink wink.
