The holidays have come and gone, the missing wreaths and trees have left a blank canvas, and if you’re anything like me, the absence of holiday spirit and festive decor might just have you laser-focused on what’s next for your home.
The cold, post-holiday months can be challenging, so I love to spend a little more time winter-proofing my home, adding extra touches of warmth and coziness to every corner, and replacing the stockings and ornaments with chunky knits and neutral greenery.
Below I’m sharing some of my favorite tips for transforming that post-holiday blank canvas into the perfect warm and cozy space with a few simple steps.
Elevate and Neutralize Your Holiday Decor
First things first, consider how you can repurpose some of your holiday decor through the rest of the colder months, adding tasteful winter touches without prompting the neighborhood to start laying bets on when your holiday lights will finally come down.
For example, take off the red and green ribbon from your wreath and replace it with burlap so you can still enjoy the beauty of some greenery with an elevated winter touch. Give your dining room tablescape a bit of freshness, taking out obvious holiday touches but leaving the pinecones and cranberries for a little longer, or mixing in some eucalyptus for a seamless transition.
Just can’t bear to take down those beautiful holiday lights? Bring them to your back patio and restring them for a warm, spring-forward ambiance.
Keep the Cozy Throws Out
Now might be the time to tuck away that reindeer-themed throw blanket until next year, but definitely keep out the chunky knit blankets and velvet pillows. When it comes to colder weather decor, the more texture, the better. I love mixing faux furs, knits and velvets to create a warm, rich look, full of layered textiles. Want to go one step further? Layer a few rugs and you’ll be amazed at the impact it makes on your space.
Fill The Bare Spots with Textural Decor
If there is one thing to take away from this blog post, it’s texture, texture, texture. Any space that looks a little bare can benefit from a touch of character and rustic texture. I love to fill bowls with natural touches like moss or pinecones and fill vessels and vases with branches and stems. Bringing the outdoors in can add a sense of serenity and peace, while adding visual interest.
Create a Cozy Nook with Added Design Details
Find some additional joy in your post-holiday decor flip and give some extra attention to one cozy nook or corner you know you will spend a lot of time in. For me, this space is my reading corner. Reading is such an important part of my daily routine, and having a comfortable, cozy, relaxing space to unwind makes all of the difference.
For you, maybe this is where you do your daily meditation, journal, or draw. Whatever this space is for, take the time to create a spot that feels like a warm hug and makes you that much more excited to take some time for yourself. Invest in a new, cozy chair; place a textural rug underneath, add a beautiful velvet throw pillow, or toss a cozy knit blanket over the arm; fill it with warm textures and textiles and make it feel like you.
