There’s nothing quite like the feeling of finishing a project — and when it’s a project for homeowners looking to maximize rest and relaxation in a dream location? That’s almost too good to be true. I recently unveiled the photos of the #AKDHamptonsHideaway, and I’m now excited to share a few behind-the-scenes details about this truly one-of-a-kind second home.
Creating a Home Away From Home…
A few years after we finished these homeowners’ Tribeca loft, they purchased this unique home in the woods of Amagansett. While their Manhattan residence leans urban and curated, we discussed making this home a little more grounding and a lot more vacation-friendly. The result? The type of home you’ll daydream about visiting for long weekends and lazy summer getaways… I mean, just look at that in-home sauna!
Getting Inspired…
While hearing the words “the Hamptons” typically conjures images of beachfront villas, the woods of Amagansett feel much less coastal than their southern counterparts. With ample greenery surrounding every inch of the home, it was a no-brainer to ensure the beauty of the outdoors made its way inside. To capture the serenity only nature can provide, the home was filled with massive picture windows — no treatments necessary — and allowed the scenery outside to serve as artwork within. From there, we chose furnishings, supplemental art, and accessories that complemented the view without detracting from it. Upon entry, you’ll find muted colors, biophilic elements, and feminine silhouettes. Despite the home’s unique layout (it’s essentially three spaces connected by walkable hallways), the outdoors can have their moment no matter where in the home you stand.
Come On Over…
These city dwellers were looking for an escape, but they wanted to bring all their loved ones with them — meaning the home would be used for entertaining time and time again. Knowing all too well that wine will be spilled and overflowing plates will be passed, we wanted to ensure the fabrics and materials used throughout are able to withstand the wear and tear that comes with entertaining… and look beautiful in the meantime.
The Star of The Show…
Imagine designing a house in the Hamptons and NOT going all in on the pool… I’d be crazy to let that pass me by! We had so much fun creating this almost-four-season pool house to accompany the home’s refreshing outdoor pool, ultimately offering another space for entertaining… or napping… or reading… With plenty of shade, I’m imagining the homeowners spending their days and nights taking breaks between swims, sharing meals together, and even making s’mores by the fire pit. You know I of course added a basket of blankets for chilly evenings…
What’s Life Without a Few Challenges…
As idyllic as this place turned out, there were certainly a few moments of difficulty. All of this home’s furniture was ordered in December of 2020, meaning the supply chains were not on our side. We definitely had to get creative and put our heads together — but the result is all the more rewarding knowing we collaborated with local and national creators and makers to bring our vision to life. There’s so much to be said for the power of a strong team, and I’m proud to know this one was the best in the business.
All told, this project offered exciting opportunities to work with stunning natural surroundings and relaxation that can only be found away from the city. I see more vacation homes in my future
Congratulations on such an exciting project! I loved reading about the different spaces for entertaining! Your work is always so well thought out. I especially love the in home sauna and pool house!
