Let’s take a trip down memory lane… At the end of 2021, I predicted that one of 2022’s biggest design trends would be the addition of biophilic elements into more and more homes. I think it’s fair to say I was onto something with that one. Earth tones are having a major moment, and we’re also seeing homeowners embrace the magic of natural elements. While you won’t find any granola, boho vibes here, I love finding ways to incorporate biophilic design into my own chic, elegant taste. Here, I’m sharing a few ways to bring nature indoors with a classic AKD touch.
What is biophilic design?
In its simplest form, biophilic design is the incorporation of nature, greenery, natural materials, and light into a built environment. While certain homeowners have always been attracted to a more natural vibe, it’s become more popular as remote workers have spent more time at home than ever before. While it’s a simple concept, biophilic design can be added to a space in a multitude of ways (both big and small) with various results. Thankfully, biophilic design isn’t one-size-fits-all — and I have a few tried-and-true methods for adding it to my designs without straying from my design style.
What are the benefits of biophilic design?
No matter how you choose to incorporate biophilic design into your own style, this technique offers an array of mental and physical benefits. There is no doubt that natural light plays a vital role in our lives — bringing us joy, sparking our creativity, and increasing our productivity. Additionally, the inclusion of greenery and plants has been known to increase air quality, boost happiness at home, and provide energy. Put simply, we all know how good it feels to get outside, breathe in some fresh air, and enjoy the soothing effects of nature — so any possible way we can bring that feeling indoors is a positive in my book. Like I said, it’s crucial to execute biophilic design in your own unique way — if it doesn’t feel like “you,” it won’t have the desired calming effect.
I want to start small… How should I begin?
Open up those windows! Let the fresh air in and allow the sound of nature in your home. Listen to the birds, the rain, or the wind. Breathing in fresh air can improve your immune system and balance your mood. Also, I recommend increasing access to natural light or adding a few more houseplants. More surprisingly, any inclusion of just the color green can even be considered biophilic. Incorporating an emerald wall or a seafoam sofa can create a calm effect and mimic the feeling of being outdoors (which is especially helpful for those of us who live in a place that’s cold many months of the year!). If you aren’t sure you’re ready for the commitment to the green, try a removable wallpaper to test your liking.
How can I incorporate even more biophilic design into my home?
-
Incorporate marble or clay tiles in bathrooms, kitchens, or mudrooms.
-
Create a wall gallery of art that incorporates rising suns, forests, singing birds, and wildflowers.
-
Change out any hardware on cabinetry with an unlacquered brass (the patina adds a really organic element).
-
Try an accent wall with a paper that incorporates vines, leaves, or even birds.
-
Add gorgeous upholstered chairs in green wool or recycled leather to an old antique dining table.
-
Utilize a sound machine to access the benefits of the sound of flowing water, which can help with deep relaxation of the body and mind.
I want to go big and bold… what are some major biophilic trends right now?
Outdoor showers and outdoor living rooms are taking center stage right now. These elements truly allow people (even those who live in an urban environment) an opportunity to soothe and energize and feel fully connected to nature. When possible, I enjoy designing homes that have more than one outdoor space — which allows the homeowner to experience and enjoy multiple facets of nature. Nature is constantly changing… and it’s a gift to observe it!
