A Designer’s Guide to Wallpaper: Your Questions, Answered

Just like that signature charcuterie board you’re known for at gatherings, or your twist on a classic cocktail everyone dreams about every time you entertain, every designer needs a few go-to design statements. It’s no secret I love adding my beloved black wrought-iron curtain rods into just about every project and designing coffee tables and accessories with the rule of odds — there are just a few elements you’ll find in nearly every home I design. But there’s one design element that stands out beyond the rest… in fact, I have yet to find a project where it can’t be used. As one of the most versatile yet statement-making design elements out there, wallpaper adds depth and interest to any space and turns any room into a unique space of its own.

Let’s chat a bit more about one of my favorite wallcoverings, that, in my opinion, oftentimes gets an undeserved bad reputation. Below, I’m sharing five of the most common questions I’m asked about wallpaper — plus, my time-tested answers.

When should I use wallpaper?

Like I said, I’ve yet to find a project where this classic isn’t a fit. So often, wallpaper is discredited as old-fashioned or stuffy — when in reality, it’s easily one of the best shape-shifters in the design world. Whether you’re looking to go bright or neutral, bold or relaxed, there’s an option for you… It’s my favorite way to add subtle texture without overwhelming the senses. All that to say: Any time you’ve got a blank wall, wallpaper should be at the top of your list.

Do I choose the wallpaper first, or design the room first?

There isn’t one single answer to this question… it really depends on the space! If I find a wallpaper I just HAVE to have, I’ll snatch it up — and the design can come later. Sometimes, wallpaper acts as the perfect starting point for a room… but other times, it’s just the right finishing touch. If you haven’t already chosen wallpaper, a safe bet is to design first. That way, you can decide on a pattern and texture later to compliment other textiles in the room.

How do I know which wallpaper is right?

Just like when choosing colors for your space, it’s important to begin by deciding how you want to feel. What type of energy do you want from the room? In a primary bedroom, you may want to go with something in a minimal, serene pattern with quiet tones (like in the AKD Lakeview Family Home). For a powder room (aka a room that most of your guests will visit), you may want to go with some personality and make a “wow” statement out of the space (think: jewel tones and bold patterns!). Wallpapering a living room, kitchen, or other entertaining area? Don’t be afraid to make the paper a little more lively to add energy to the space!

Do you have any personal favorite wallpaper trends or designs?

Bold tones and textures are becoming my favorite (hear me out: I love the idea of a large scale design in a small space…). I think biophilic and natural motifs are wildly popular right now (In fact, I even predicted this as one of 2022’s biggest design trends). From birds and butterflies to flora and fauna, the influence of nature in wallpaper is undeniable. Borrowing from nature creates a harmonious interior space — and it is exactly what people are feeling in 2022. We’re all hungry for nature, color, and beauty… so don’t be afraid to go for it.

Okay, I’m sold… Now how can I make my wallpaper even more unique?

While the right wallpaper makes enough of a statement on its own, I’m currently of the mindset that creative risk is making a comeback. Don’t be afraid to do a contrast trim on the moldings or the beams on the ceilings (like I did in the AKD Vibrant Winnetka Abode!).
