High Design in Hollywood: The Best of Movie Homes

There’s nothing quite like the comfort of stepping into the home of an old friend… that feeling of warmth and ease can feel just as beautiful as great design itself! As a longtime movie lover, I often feel that same sense of comfort when I “step” into my favorite fictional sets: the homes and spaces featured in a few of my most-watched films.

This month, I thought I’d have a little fun and round up some design details straight from Hollywood. Each of these films incorporate high design as a key element to tell a story and detail the complex characters’ lives, and I’m so moved by set designers’ ability to build a world on screen. Enjoy these favorites of mine, and drop your favorites below in the comments!

The Royal Tenenbaums

Not only is The Royal Tenenbaums one of my all-time favorite movies, but I also fell in love with the color-saturated interiors of the namesake family’s home. A few favorite elements include the incredible art gallery walls, the red Scalamandre wallpaper, a pitched tent in the middle of a room, and the infamous pink telephone. Fun fact: The house itself is a gorgeous Flemish Revival home in NYC and was actually built in the 1880s!

Now you know I’ve got quite the range in movies… As creepy as this film was, I fell in love with the chic, tasteful furnishings and sophistication of the luxe, minimalist Park house. The floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on the home’s gardens make such a statement, and the set was beautiful and unique at every turn. While this home is the complete opposite of that in The Royal Tenenbaums, I’ve always said that I wish I could have five homes… because I would design them all differently!

The Devil Wears Prada

While it’s not a house, the office in The Devil Wears Prada is certainly Miranda Priestly’s home away from home — and the space perfectly exemplifies the ambitious Miranda’s personality. I love its large windows overlooking NYC and the light walls and floors matching her white Hermès scarf. The space is detailed with contrasting black touches, like the black chairs and the elegant black lacquer table (home to the always-fresh flowers just behind her desk). I can only dream of an office that is this refined and organized!

Tony Stark’s cliffside Malibu mansion is one of my favorite movie homes — and can you blame me? I love the feminine curves of all the furniture in juxtaposition to the masculine steel, glass, and polished concrete completing the architecture. The floor-to-ceiling windows, with unmatched ocean views, are remarkable — but the extra light that streams in from the skylights really makes the interior space come alive. Moving water and sunlight are two elements that truly put me in my happy place, so I think that is why I am so drawn to this house. To me, it exudes serenity, calmness, and peacefulness, and it is definitely a fabulous mixture of form and function.

A movie with strong design immediately ups my rating! What other movie homes stand out to you? Drop them below!
