When two well-traveled attorneys with a young child decided to update their New York City loft, they turned to Amy Kartheiser to create a space that both reflected and elevated their tastes and lifestyle. AKD transformed the industrial space — a former pipe-fitting factory — into a modern, yet family-friendly home that beautifully displays collected artifacts from around the globe. 

“The family had purchased all these things from galleries and their trips to Africa, Thailand, Morocco … and they were all bubble wrapped and sitting under a table,” Kartheiser says. “They needed to be seen, so we came up with an idea of making a wall of art from these artifacts. We drew out the elevation, designed the lacquered-white shelves, and worked with an art installer in Manhattan. Now they can see and enjoy their art throughout the home.“

In the primary bedroom (“a moment of respite,” Kartheiser says), AKD incorporated a bed, rug, and art the client sourced on their travels. Custom nightstands are from The Bright Group, mohair and leather chairs and ottoman from Holly Hunt.

“I took cues from the architecture … The sofas and cocktail tables reiterate the curves of the windows while the leather daybed suggests the strength of the columns that run the length of the condo. The end product balanced refined pieces working with the primitive artwork, one enhancing the other.”
