A FAMILY HOME IN CHICAGO GETS A LIVELY REFRESH

When a vibrant family needed a whole-home refresh, AKD delivered with style, adding equal doses of sophistication and comfort.

After living in their Chicago home for more than 17 years, an active family of four knew it was time to breathe new life into the space. Amy Kartheiser Design not only improved the flow, making the space more functional and livable, but upped every aspect of the design, incorporating layers of warmth and coziness to create a respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

In the living room, AKD added custom moldings on either side of the fireplace. “It doesn’t cost a ton of money and adds some great texture to an otherwise flat and lifeless wall,” Kartheiser says.” The living room’s chair and sofa were sourced from Baker.

The classic kitchen features a pillowed tile backsplash and a chrome custom hood.

“We started from scratch with the family room and kitchen in the back of the house,” Kartheiser says. “It turned out to be a great family space. They can watch movies together on that giant sectional. They can eat together on the custom banquette in the dining space, which has a beautiful piece of art the homeowner’s family gifted her hanging over it.”

Kartheiser went bold in the bathrooms, adding a custom vanity and Cole & Son wallpaper in the powder room and a show-stopping chrome tub in the primary bath. An oversized chandelier and the homeowners’ own artwork add to the appeal.
