When it comes to small spaces, there’s no reason to keep things tame… In fact, fortune favors the bold (in life AND in design). While I’m a sucker for neutral classics, I rarely turn down an oversized, oversaturated accent – especially when it’s highlighted in a small space begging for boldness. You can make a statement in any room in your home, but I personally find that the impact is heightened in smaller spaces. Let’s chat through a few questions you may have about designing (and wow-ing!) in a small space.
What should I do with the design of a small space?
In short, anything — it’s the perfect place to play around. I personally love to experiment in small powder rooms, offices, butler’s pantries, reading nooks, breakfast bars, and more. Not only can you turn any corner into a functional space, but you can take that corner and create a memorable design experience as well. Small spaces beg for drama and style — leaving you with an endless array of possibilities on even the most miniature canvas.
Is any space TOO small for a design moment?
Absolutely not — there’s no such thing! People often tell me that they’re afraid of making a small room look even smaller, but luckily, the opposite tends to be true. While a space may be lacking in size, it makes up for its deficit (and then some!) in opportunity. A small space can be designed to be ultra elevated and full of personality — if done right, the impact can be memorable and lasting.
What kind of impact can I make?
When you’re only designing a small room, you’re able to turn that space into an experience in itself. While I always think of how I want homeowners and visitors to feel in a space, that’s exacerbated in tinier rooms. In short: Small spaces allow you to experiment design-wise and function-wise. Not sure you’re ready to commit to a full in-house library? Experiment with bold built-ins in your small home office. Wondering if bright cabinets are your style? Try them out in the butler’s pantry. But it’s not just about testing things out… Smaller rooms provide a chance to add favorite, time-tested elements into a new space. Example: You love bold art, but usually add it as a complement in a well-filled room. In a smaller space, one piece of bright, beloved art can cover a room and offer an exact curated experience.
I’m not sure where to start… Any ideas?
I’ll do you one better — here are several ideas for maximizing a small space and creating an unforgettable design moment:
-
Wallpaper or lacquer your ceiling.
-
Mix colors, textures, and patterns. When in doubt, create some contrast with unique layers and pairings!
-
Up the scale on furniture, lighting, and art. Go big!
-
Don’t neglect the “6th wall” in the room: the floor. For example, add a herringbone pattern in with the flooring and/or a fun patterned rug.
-
Panel the walls for additional texture and an ultra-luxe look.
